In 1981, the Guilford Preservation Alliance (GPA) completed a survey of 450 buildings then more than fifty years old and considered to be of architectural significance (Survey of the Historic Architecture of Guilford, Conn.). Two thirds of the buildings are within the boundaries of the four National Register areas. You may check the list online here to see if your house is on this inventory. You will find additional information about the buildings in the loose-leaf survey, in five volumes, housed in the Historical Room of the Guilford Library. The GPA also completed a supplement to this 1981 survey and submitted these addresses to the Town of Guilford in August 2009—this list is the second one appearing below. Please note that the information on our website is being continually updated and is not identical to the information contained in the print versions of the surveys. Homeowners seeking documentation relating to their properties for legal purposes are advised to check with the Town’s zoning enforcement officer.

In addition to the surveys mentioned above, we are excited to unveil a new, more comprehensive annotated list of properties in Guilford. This survey, entitled “Significant Structures Fifty Years Old or More, Guilford, Connecticut,” incorporates information (with his permission) from Joel Helander’s inventory of pre-1911 buildings as published in his book A Treasury of Guilford Places (c2008), also from Helander’s Revised Historic Building Inventory Guilford, Connecticut (c2009), and includes as well properties newer than 1911 (up to fifty years ago). We have provided notes for each property indicating where further information can be found. This document appears on our website for the first time in May 2011, and then was replaced in February 2013 with an illustrated version. Photos are available for a small sampling of the houses so far. Our photographers Ellen Ebert and Eleanor Green are planning to add more photos soon. You can see this illustrated version here:
