HISTORIC BOWLING ALLEY OPEN FOR VIEWING

Come see and learn about Guilford’s Gothic Bowling Alley! The Guilford Preservation Alliance awarded Dr. Richard Lewis a $5,000 grant toward the preservation of the historic bowling alley located in the far rear of his property at 29 Broad Street.   As a special thank you for GPA support the Gothic bowling alley will be open to the community on Saturday, October 14th from 10:00 until 3:00. Self guided tours sponsored by the GPA will be available. The very large, two story, Carriage House on the property will also be open for viewing. Don’t miss experiencing these historic gem. The kids will be amazed.

GUILFORD CITIZEN’S DAY PARADE

As in years past the Guilford Preservation Alliance helped celebrate our community by marching in the Guilford Citizen’s Day Parade. With a whirl to days gone by antique “penny-farthing” high wheeler bicycles and other antique bicycles were part of the GPA fun. Come to the Parade and watch for the Guilford Preservation Alliance.

WITNESS STONES PROJECT

The Witness Stones Project is planning its first installation of Witness Stones on November 2nd in front of the Guilford Town Hall on Park Street. The project was started when Doug Nygren brought back the idea of the project from Germany where they remember the locations where Jews lived before they were deported and murdered during the Holocaust. Applying the concept of remembering to local slavery, Doug imagined stones placed in Guilford to restore the history of our past.

The Witness Stone Project is a committee formed under the Guilford Preservation Alliance. The mission of the project is through research, education and civic engagement, the Witness Stones Project seeks to restore the history and honor and the humanity and contributions of the enslaved individuals who helped build our community.

The installation ceremony will include local dignitaries and 8th grade students from E.C.Adams Middle School. For more information please go to www.WitnessStones.org

THANK YOU VOLUNTEERS

The Guilford Preservation Alliance wants to thank those who volunteered in the Kiosk at the Information Plaza this year. Our Greeters have been a welcoming sight for folks coming to Guilford for the first time, offering information about our historic town and all it has to offer.

This year we have had visitors from as far away as Singapore, and many states west of the Mississippi. Begun in 2015 the Kiosk has been utilized by hundreds of visitors from 22 countries and 33 states!

The GPA would also like to thank the many business owners who advertise on www.visitguilfordct.com which helps maintain the Kiosk. A list of these advertisers is located at the Kiosk and we encourage you to patronize them in appreciation of their support. The Kiosk has been a big success and the feedback from visitors has made the experience for all well worth the efforts involved. Marcia Safirstein and Tracy Tomaselli
