Quarterly News: January to March, 2018

Happy New Year to all! It has been another exciting and productive year for the GPA as we continued to pursue our mission of preserving both the built and natural environment of Guilford. Here are some of our accomplishments this year:

  • Witness Stones Project which aims to acknowledge the history of slavery in Guilford
  • GPA was instrumental in preserving two historic buildings in town
  • A GPA committee began work on “A Guide to Preserving the Historic House”
  • The Guilford Tourism Committee, the GPA and the Chamber of Commerce are working on a town signage project
  • GPA’s Train Station Committee is working with Amtrak, the DOT and the Town to preserve the 19th century brick water tower and engine house at the Guilford Shoreline East Commuter Rail Station.
  • The GPA supported placing a plaque at Sachem’s Head to commemorate a Revolutionary War event.
  • An open house was held for the historic bowling alley and barn at the Chittenden Estate on Broad St.
  • GPA’s Jones Trust is also making possible several town restoration projects
  • The Information Plaza Kiosk was visited by over 500 people looking for directions on where to eat, shop, hike, boat and even live in Guilford.
  • Nearly 100 visitors enjoyed GPA free “Around the Green” walking tours.

A SITE FOR ALL SEASONS

There’s value for businesses and residents on visitguilfordct.com

Are you new to town? Are you a long-time resident looking for something new to do near home, or maybe you just want to explore what’s beyond your usual haunts? Maybe you’re a business looking for greater exposure within our local community. Well, www.visitguilfordct.com is just what the doctor ordered.

Developed more than two years ago by the Guilford Preservation Alliance, the site is highlighted at the information plaza located on Church Street at the top of the Green (next to the Community Center). It serves as a great “walk-up” resource for hundreds of people who visit our town primarily between May and September. But, of course, the site is accessible to anyone and everyone year-round. So, whether you’re on your home computer or tablet or out walking the green with smart phone in-hand, let’s check out some of its benefits.

  • Many shopping, dining and local services are prominently displayed, with more being added all the time. If you’re looking for services in the community, we should be your first stop.
  • There are seven parks in our town (yes, one is for the dogs!). The site lets you locate and read about activities available at each.
  • Some 20 trails and maps are available. With the right shoes and clothing you can enjoy the outdoors all year. And for the less adventurous there are guided and self-guided walking tours in the heart of town.
  • Our events calendar highlights community activities, holiday celebrations, and historic events.

There’s no question that www.visitguilfordct.com is a great continuing resource for residents. And local business will appreciate the benefits of being seen on the site by the growing number of residents and non-residents who visit it.
