Significant changes have been proposed for Guilford’s signage regulations to allow large billboards that would change message, colors and brightness every 8 seconds. The Planning and Zoning Commission is considering this change at its next meeting.
The applicant, which owns the billboards on Route 1 near the water tower, applied last August for permission to replace them with an LED electric billboard. Under existing Guilford signage regulations, no billboards of any type are presently allowed (except those billboards grandfathered in as non-conforming uses). The applicant’s proposal was turned down by the Commission, which agreed that the application violated Guilford’s signage regulations. Now the applicant has returned with a proposal to change the regulations. This change is inconsistent with the character of Guilford, and would set a dramatic precedent for the entire state of Connecticut.
No such LED billboards have been built or permitted in any town in Connecticut except along limited access highways. Branford recently rejected the same application by the same applicant. If the PZC approves the application, it will make Guilford the first of 169 towns in the state to open this Pandora’s box.
